As climate change becomes increasingly urgent, important questions emerge regarding how we perceive existing buildings. Is new development always more sustainable? Or can adaptive reuse and renovation become an essential part of the future of heritage conservation and urban development?
Through the case of SoZa (Former Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment) in The Hague, the Netherlands, this discussion will explore the relationship between modern architectural heritage, sustainability, embodied carbon, and governance challenges within urban redevelopment processes. The case also illustrates how everyday buildings that are not yet fully recognised as heritage may face demolition pressures amid urban transformation agendas and market-driven development.
This discussion aims to open broader reflections on the future of modern heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, and the position of heritage within the context of climate transition.
Speaker: Prof. Ana Pereira Roders
(Professor of Heritage & Values, Delft University of Technology)
This discussion is open to the public and mandatory for Universitas Trisakti’s students of the Historic Urban Landscape, Adaptive Reuse, and Architectural Design IV courses.
